SSS1 PHYSICS

In junior secondary school, Basic Science gives students a broad understanding of the natural world, including the basics of physics, chemistry, and biology. When students move to Senior Secondary School 1 (SSS1),the focus shifts to Physics- one of the science class specializations. At this level, students learn core Physics concepts like mechanics, heat, light, electricity, and magnetism. Through theoretical teachings, practical demonstrations, and hands-on experiments, they gain insights into the functioning of the physical world. The  scheme of work for Physics aims to nurture critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and scientific inquiry. By applying mathematical principles to real-life situations, learners understand how theory connects with observation. The study of Physics in SS1 extends beyond classroom boundaries to practical applications in daily life, technology, and industry. Physics study in SS1 is a stepping stone for further academic and professional pursuits in the sciences by providing students with essential foundational knowledge for their future endeavors. At the end of the SSS1 session, students can;

  • Define measurements, physical quantities, and their units;
  • Distinguish between scalars and vectors;
  • Identify the causes, types, and basic equations of motion;
  • Describe friction, its types, and methods of reduction;
  • Identify the relationship between upthrust, density, and viscosity;
  • Establish the relationship between work, energy, and power;
  • Distinguish between the various methods of heat transfer;
  • Explain the effect of heat energy and temperature on materials(solid & fluid);
  • Define field and differentiate between the various types;
  • Identify the three states of matter and their various characteristics;
  • Define elasticity and expansivity and highlight their applications;
  • Analyze the concept of electricity;
  • Describe the mode of functioning of the gold-leaf electroscope.
